Summary

The Journey

Day 1)Olbia-Alghero - 227km

Today can only start crossing the Costa Smeralda, destination of the international jet set, where a panoramic road overlooking the crystalline sea, yatch and dream villas set in the nature will make you daydream. You will pass through the tourist areas of Palau and Santa Teresa, where at the foot of the Capo Testa lighthouse you can refresh your spirit while enjoying a good coffee, admiring the Bocche di Bonifacio and the white cliffs of Corsica. Then continue towards Castelsardo, keeping the sea on your right in the coast that runs through the northern part of Sardinia: the mediterranean vegetation and the scent of myrtle berries will be your traveling companion. Once you arrive in Castelsardo, an ancient village perched high above the sea, we recommend a visit to the castle and a lunch at the restaurant "L'incantu" accompanied by the splendid view that characterizes it. After an excellent lunch of fish, head towards Alghero, crossing the whole province of Sassari. Once arrived allow yourself a little healthy relaxation sipping a breathtaking aperitif at the Riservato Beach Bar. Only after watching the sun set over the sea, get lost in the narrow streets of the old town where you will have a wide choice of typical restaurants, among these we recommend "La bifora", located on the ramparts that dominate the marina.

Day 2)Alghero-Arbatax - 234km

Head towards Villanova Monteleone to cross all of Sardinia in an easterly direction passing through the boundless Foresta Burgos between Bono, Nuoro and Oliena to get to the foot of the Corrasi mountain range. The destination is the restaurant "Su Gologone", a stone's throw from the homonymous source that we recommend you visit. Here you can enjoy a lunch with the best of sardinian gastronomic tradition, accompanied by a unique atmosphere and attention to detail. After lunch (definitely abundant!) It is a must visit the art workshops of the restaurant where the very kind staff of the structure will tell you the history and origins of this corner of Sardinia. In the afternoon, quickly descend by driving along a stretch of road with breathtaking views of the sea that will lead you from the mountains of Dorgali to Cala Gonone, a lively seaside village famous for its beaches accessible only by sea.
.

Day 3)Arbatax-Portu Maga - 194km

This morning you will drive in the most ancient center of Sardinia, finding yourself at high altitude between the mountain resorts of Oliena, Orgosolo, Fonni, Desulo and Aritzo. Magical places, rich in history and centuries-old traditions; here you will notice how much nature and people are different from the coastal areas, but the hospitality and kindness of the population will accompany you throughout the journey. After passing the mountains you will arrive in the Giara di Gesturi plain where, after a quick lunch, we recommend a visit to the Reggia Nuragica di Barumini: the largest nuragic settlement dating back over 4000 years ago. In this magical place the guides will immerse you in the most ancient history of the island and will tell you the life of the inhabitants of Sardinia between wars, religion, society and customs. After the visit, head east towards Portu Maga, where you can dine and spend the night.

Day 4)Portu Maga-Cagliari - 249km

Today you will wake up with a breakfast with a breathtaking sea view. You will visit Piscinas, the largest natural desert in Europe, with its high white sand dunes overlooking a crystal clear sea, it is certainly one of the most magical places on the island. Do not worry, being disoriented is the least that can happen to you! You will then head towards Portixeddu, deciding whether to cross the desert offroad (verifying that conditions allow it) or bypass it, passing through Ingustosu. A road full of landscapes that will not disappoint you will wait for you. You will enter the most important mining area of the island heading towards Masua, along the coast you will be amazed to see a huge sea stack in the middle of the sea. This is the "Pan di Zucchero", name due to the very clear color of the rock it is made of. We recommend a guided tour of Porto Flavia, a mine overlooking the sea that will leave you speechless. Continue south, reaching the island of Sant'Antioco for a lunch in Calasetta. If you love fish you are in the right place, in this area in fact the tuna fishing has been the primary source of income for centuries. Before heading to Cagliari do not miss the 50km of coastline that surround this characteristic island. After over 250km of track you will not see the hours to enjoy a relaxing evening in the most elegant city of Sardinia.

Day 5)Cagliari-Arbatax -  243km

Today is a day of driving, bends and fun. It starts immediately with the first piece of the SS125 Orientale Sarda, which connects Cagliari with Santa Teresa. The most southerly part of this fantastic road, in the Burcei area, is really special because in a few kilometers the scenery around you will change quickly making you feel inside american canyon. Shortly before Tertenìa turn towards Perdasdefogu and you will enter the oldest part of SardiniaBarbagia. Here you will be surrounded by the Gennargentu mountains in the province of Nuoro. Curves, woods and mountain landscapes will become the protagonists of this day. After having lunch in Seui you will cross Gairo Vecchia, an abandoned village at the foot of a sloping mountain, Ulassai and Lanusei and then reach Arbatax, where you can relax and spend the night.

Day 6)Arbatax-Olbia - 252km

Head north towards Dorgali in the most beautiful stretch of the SS 125 Orientale Sarda, the one that connects Dorgali to Tortolì: the mountains, the gorge of Su Gorroppu and the landscapes of this unspoiled corner of Sardinia will give you emotions strong. Cross the tourist areas of San Teodoro, Siniscola and Budoni up to Porto Taverna where you can have lunch on the sand in the beautiful restaurant "12.1", admiring the island of Tavolara. In the afternoon you reach the Costa Smeralda, destination of the international jet set, where the panoramic road overlooking the crystal clear sea, yatch and dream villas set in the nature will make you daydream.
